Two Solid Options, Different Trade-Offs

If you're re-roofing a home in Ferndale or anywhere else in Whatcom County, the metal-versus-shingle question comes up almost every time. Both are proven roofing materials. The right choice depends less on which one is "better" and more on your budget, your roof's design, and how much long-term maintenance you're willing to take on given our local weather.

Ferndale sits close enough to the water and to the Nooksack valley that roofs here deal with a specific combination of stressors: salt-laden air off the Strait, driving wind-blown rain for much of the year, and a long stretch of damp, shaded months that keeps moss and moisture pressure on the roof surface longer than in drier climates. Both metal and shingle roofs can hold up well against that combination — but they get there differently.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles remain the most common roofing material in this area, and for good reason. They're budget-friendly, straightforward to install and repair, and available in enough styles and colors to match almost any home. A properly installed architectural shingle roof, with good ventilation and flashing detail, will comfortably last 20-30 years even in a wet coastal climate.

The trade-off is maintenance. Shingles have more surface texture and seams than metal, which gives moss and lichen more places to take hold during our long wet season. Left unchecked, moss growth can lift shingle edges and hold moisture against the roof deck. That's manageable with periodic cleaning and gutter maintenance, but it is an ongoing task rather than a set-it-and-forget-it situation.

  • Upfront cost: Lower than metal, typically the most affordable roofing option.
  • Lifespan: Roughly 20-30 years depending on product quality and installation.
  • Moss/moisture: More prone to moss buildup; benefits from annual inspection and cleaning.
  • Repairs: Simple and inexpensive to patch individual sections.

Metal Roofing

Standing seam and other metal roofing systems have grown more popular in Whatcom County over the past decade, particularly for homes closer to Bellingham Bay and other exposed sites where wind and salt air are more of a factor. Metal sheds moss and standing water far more effectively than shingles because it has fewer seams and a smooth, steep-shedding surface. It also holds up well against wind-driven rain, since properly installed metal panels have far fewer entry points for water intrusion.

Metal roofing costs more upfront, generally two to three times what a shingle roof runs, but it typically lasts 40-60 years with minimal maintenance. For homeowners planning to stay in their home long-term, that lifespan can offset the higher initial investment. Metal also handles heavy moss-prone tree cover better than shingles, which matters for the many wooded lots around Ferndale.

  • Upfront cost: Higher initial investment than shingles.
  • Lifespan: Often 40-60 years with proper installation.
  • Moss/moisture: Sheds water and moss more effectively due to smooth, low-seam surface.
  • Noise/expansion: With proper underlayment and installation, rain noise and thermal movement are non-issues for most homeowners.

What We Weigh Before Recommending Either One

We don't push one material over the other as a default. Instead, we look at a few things specific to the property:

  1. Roof pitch and design. Steeper roofs shed moss and water more easily regardless of material, which can make shingles a perfectly reasonable choice even in a wet climate.
  2. Tree cover and shading. Homes tucked under heavy tree canopy hold more moisture and moss pressure, which tips the scale toward metal or at least toward a more moss-resistant shingle product.
  3. Exposure to wind and salt air. Properties closer to open water or exposed ridgelines take more of a beating from driving rain and salt, which is where metal's tighter seams tend to pay off.
  4. How long you plan to stay. Metal's higher upfront cost makes the most sense when it's spread over decades of ownership; shingles can be the more practical call for a shorter time horizon.

Maintenance Either Way

No roofing material in Whatcom County is fully maintenance-free. Gutters need to stay clear, moss needs to be kept in check, and flashing around chimneys, vents, and valleys needs periodic inspection. Metal reduces how often that maintenance is needed; it doesn't eliminate it.

Getting an Honest Read on Your Specific Roof

The best way to decide between metal and shingles is to have someone walk your actual roof — check the pitch, the ventilation, the tree cover, and the current condition of your decking and flashing. That's a conversation, not a sales pitch, and we're happy to have it.
